With the Wind River Mountains as a backdrop

Lander Golf Course

Picture it: The Wind River Mountains in the distance, a deer grazing just far enough away that you’re aware of one another but not in each other’s space, a meadowlark singing, and green grass surrounding you. This peaceful setting is what you’ll experience at the Lander Golf Course.

With the bragging rights of being one of the highest-elevation golf courses in the state at 5,600 feet, Lander’s course also has the benefit of being situated in one of the least windy towns in Wyoming. The laid-back atmosphere is welcoming of golfers of all skill levels, and the rates match that attitude. The 18-hole course, however, is nothing to turn your nose up at. The par 71-course is 6,574 yards long from the longest tees. The breeze and altitude can add to the challenge. But the fairways and greens are always well-maintained.

Preview the course, hole-by-hole, on the club website, then head out to experience it yourself. Your front nine will be a totally different experience from playing the back nine, giving you a round with a bit of everything: Start in a wide open space with few trees or turns to work around. The front nine suits the local feeling of having plenty of elbow room. Then progress to the back nine, where the game changes. Trees, twists and turns, and striking elevation changes will keep you on your toes as you round out 18 holes in Lander.

You may time your visit with one of many fun and challenging events put together by the Lander Golf Club, or, more likely, enjoy a peaceful round with few people around to distract you from your vacation.

After the Game

Stick Around for a While

Once you’ve played your round, you can spend a little extra time appreciating the views by having lunch and a beverage at the Flatstick Bar and Grill at the clubhouse. Many locals recommend the Flatstick for the best burger in town, and the views over your burger are hard to beat. The sports-bar feel will keep your laid-back vacation mood on track as you settle into your Lander holiday, whether it involves moving on to hiking and biking or coming back for another round of golf the next day.
